Difference Between RF Isolator and RF Circulator

【Abstract】In practical applications, isolators and circulators are often mentioned at the same time. What is the relationship between isolators and circulators? What's the difference? This article will focus on these issues.

              Isolator, also known as unidirectional transmitter, is a device for unidirectional transmission of electromagnetic wave. When the electromagnetic wave is transmitted along the forward direction, all the power can be fed to the load, and the reverse wave from the load will be greatly attenuated. This unidirectional transmission characteristic can be used to isolate the influence of load variation on the signal source.

                           The circulator is a branch transmission system with non-reciprocal characteristics. The commonly used ferrite circulator is Y-junction circulator, which consists of three branches with 120 degree angular symmetry.

 

一、What is Isolator?

Isolator, also known as unidirectional transmitter, is a device for unidirectional transmission of electromagnetic wave. 

When the electromagnetic wave is transmitted along the forward direction, all the power can be fed to the load, and the reverse wave from the load will be greatly attenuated. 

This unidirectional transmission characteristic can be used to isolate the influence of load variation on the signal source. 

Taking the field shift isolator as an example, the working principle of the ferrite isolator is further described.
    
The field-shifting isolator is made according to the different field-shifting effect of ferrite on wave patterns propagating in two directions.

It adds attenuation film on the side of ferrite slice,The deviation of the field produced by the two directions is different.

The electric field of the wave propagating along the forward (-z) direction is biased towards the side of the non attenuating piece. 

The electric field of the wave propagating along the opposite direction (+z direction) is biased towards the side of the attenuation sheet.

Thus, the isolation function with small forward attenuation and large reverse attenuation is achieved.

二、What is Circulator

Circulator is a branch transmission system with non-reciprocal characteristics. The common ferrite circulator is Y-junction circulator. As shown in Figure 3(a), it consists of three branches with 120 degree angular symmetry.

When the applied magnetic field is zero, the ferrite is not magnetized, so the magnetic properties in all directions are the same.

So the magnetism in all directions is the same. When the signal is input from the branch line "1", the magnetic field shown in Fig. 3 (b) will be excited on the ferrite junction. 

Because the conditions of branch "2, 3" are the same, the signal is output equally.

When an appropriate magnetic field is applied, the magnetization of ferrite excites the electromagnetic field shown in Fig. 3 (c) on the ferrite junction due to anisotropy. 

When an appropriate magnetic field is applied, the magnetization of ferrite has signal output at the branch "2" and no signal output at the branch "3" due to the effect of anisotropy.

Similarly, when input by branch "2", branch "3" has output, while branch "1" has no output; when input by branch "3", branch "1" has output and branch "2" has no output.

 It can be seen that it constitutes a one-way circulation of "1""2""3""1", and the reverse is not feasible, so it is called circulator.

 三、From the physical point of view, the isolator has two ports and the circulator has three ports 

(connecting load to any port of the circulator becomes an isolator. Some isolators need to be connected with attenuator for standing wave detection. The attenuator also has a port, which looks like a circulator. In fact, the attenuator it receives is also a load. This device also belongs to isolator. Some friends call the isolator with attenuator circulator. This is a misunderstanding.)
